Thurs Jun 21 Trading Around Econ Reports

Yes, you can trade in front of big econ reports, like the Philly Fed report at 10am ET today. The trick is to have a valid technical entry signal in front of the report that would have worked on its own, even if no such report was scheduled. Partial out of the position to pay for the trade, and then hold the balance into the report ONLY if prices still reflect a profit to your remaining position as the report approaches in the last 20 seconds or so. That premium can serve to cushion the blow if reaction to the report goes against you with a sudden spike. If price comes back to your entry price on the balance of your position just before the news, bail out. No harm done. But more often than not, a technical signal to enter the market before the report will play out in agreement with the reaction to the report itself, almost as if the market
seems to 'know'.

Fri Jun 1 Pre-News Setups

If you frequent our free chat room, you are aware that I often take positions before the 10am news schedule. ...something most traders tell you not to do. But it should be understood that I do not trade the news, nor would I ever attempt to predict it. But I do take technical signals based on the Valhalla Support / Resistance Grid, and the Serial Sequent Methodology, whether these occur before or after the news. Sometimes the new just speeds things along.... You can read about these things on the website under "E-mini Trading Course", or come into the chat room and witness these trades real time.

Thurs May 31 Don't get cockey

On the one hand, you have a trading plan. It consists of those trade models that appear at the right edge of your video screen. On the other, you have a plan that acknowledges that the markets can, and usually do, just want they want. And that trade plan includes stp-loss risk management, and maximum loss per day management. Today, I hit my maximum losses early on, betting a bit too heavy on signals that usually work. But if you can keep your maximum losses per day at near the same price as any one average day's gains, you still have a chance of ending the week in the black. Managing your losses is the secret to a successful career trading futures.

Tues May 29 Too many trades...

Yes, there should be a behavior governor that restricts the number of trades taken in any given frame. I try to limit mine to 10, and if I can get anywhere near 4 pts in the 1st frame of the day with less than 10, I'm quite willing to quit trading. Today, I grossly exceeded the 10 trade limitation. My only excuse is that so many were small stp-outs under choppy conditions, where the signals remained constant throughout the chop, thus inviting so many re-entries. Eventually it paid off, but most of the time excessive trading just digs a hole.

Tues May 15 Breakdown Failure

Sometimes as clear as a breakout signal can be for the continuance of trend, a breakout failure can be for a reversal back into the trading range. Last night the TF futures finished below the neckline of what looks like an ominous H&S pattern in the daily frame. Only somebody forgot to tell price what it was supposed to do at the opening. At important junctures of expectation, a simple rule can often set the trader back in sync with the current trend. If price doesn't trigger at the significant juncture, it will still probably go the expected distance.... but in the opposite direction to what is generally expected. Shake loose of your trend prejudice. Accept the outcome. Trade the outcome.

Mon May 14 Head & Shoulders

Our focus in the free chat room each day is the the lower time frame action, but that doesn't mean we don't take the pulse of the larger frames. Today at the close, TF futures finished below the neckline of a rather ominous H&S pattern in the daily frame. And although H&S patterns are notorious for failure, despite what you read in textbooks, any short term trader should be aware of the building momentum such a pattern, if successful, can bear on the trend of the lower frames.

Thurs May 10 Russell Sandwich

Today was a good example of the lack of the usual Russell leadership.
At one point the YM was giving a sell signal near the early high of the day
shortly after the opening, while the NQ was flashing a buy signal near its
low. The Russell, our main focus, was sandwiched in between, and for
that we end up with a chop lettuce in our mouth, but not so much meat.
In the end, we caught a few good turns, but it was not easy work.

Mon May 7 Russell Laggard

Lately, we seen the Russell lose its leadership role among the 4 index
futures contracts we follow. When it is the leader, and it diverges
against new lows in the other contacts like the mini Dow and E-mini NQ,
it usually means a turn is at hand, and added to the other technical
tools we trade with, can be a strong supporting indicator. However,
when it's not leading, and in fact is lagging in the short term action
of these intraday swings, more stop-outs occur and the TF reluctantly
overcomes its divergence and joins the prevailing trend. All this is
reflected in the bars of the daily frame currently, that clearly put the
trend in a consolidation / build pattern. Eventually, this pattern
should be resolved, and TF should again lead the market.

Fri Apr 27 Signal Confirmation Bar

Using a Support / Resistance grid for entry numbers does not mean that when one of a cluster of support numbers is reached, that those lower down might be the ones that actually turn the market. Friday's
sharp plunge did exactly that. Although other signals were there for the first in a series of support numbers to hold, the spike went through two of them before turning on the lowest. Simply waiting for a single reversal bar before entering would have avoided an early entry that got the morning's trades off to a poor start, and kept the trading account from reaching a normal profit goal for the 1st frame of the day.

Mon Apr 23 Stp-Loss Management

Learning to let your trade breath a bit against the emotional threat of losing initial profits is usually more challenging than getting in the position in the first place. Making a mistake on an entry never feels as shameful as giving up profits in hand. And sometimes that first thrust is a decent profit, and either tempts you into taking it to go flat, or tempts you into moving the stp-loss in tight too soon to protect that initial thrust. But that eagerness will seldom succeed in capturing the better part of the trend as it develops, especially if you're only trading 1 or 2 contracts. In order for small size position to capture a better piece of the trend, the Trader must first survive a retest back towards the entry. Use the initial profits to go to a break-even stp-loss, or near b/e stp-loss (minus 1 or 2 ticks from entry). But to capture the better profits, you must survive the first little pullback that might come close to knocking you out before it moves on further into profits. Only now with that retest behind you, can you move your stp-loss order. Yes, it sounds so obvious and so easy, but grabbing too soon is the most tempting tendency most traders face. Unfortunately, that's exactly what I did do today with the initial short position in the TF today. I grabbed it too soon. Since the better part of the 1st frame of the day was just a big slam down to the lows, mismanaging that short and taking a minimal +1.5 pt profit meant I missed the most important opportunity of the morning session, worth some 6 pts of maximum excursion.

Fri Apr 20 Who's afraid of a Triple Witch

I've become so oblivious to option expiration that I often begin these days unaware it has even arrived... until somebody reminds me. In contrast to yesterday, everything came at a much slower pace. I used the same exact concepts taught in the Serial Sequent classes today that I should have used--but didn't--yesterday. And today, no double down on stupid trades. The money management technique for taking breakouts did chop me out of that bull side action at b/e, but the same technique has also saved a good bit of pain on false breakouts over the months. Join us in the free chat room and watch these trades called before the entries arrive

Thurs Apr 19 My Bad

Wrong day to make a mistake with my own trade plan, as the initial bull explosion came with a clear entry signal that I simply fumbled. It was there. I wasn't. And I made that compounding mistake that having missed the entry to a trend of trying to fade it with shorts before it was done. Double down on your stupidity. The ES long trades at the initial low after the news were classic, however, and helped maintain a break-even day. But how can you be happy about a b/e when there was so much raw opportunity? The number of trades I took also reveals my desperation. All that was needed to capture a good deal of these remarkable swings were 3 setup signals. The early bull signal, the pre-news top short, and a buy signal in the ES at the early low after the news did its damage. The pre-news short would have been stp'd out just as it was taken. I wouldn't have done any differently in retrospect. The ES trade at the early low was also textbook for the Serial Sequent Method. It was missing the buy entry in the earliest bull trend that put me on the wrong side, and only added to the error by fighting it. Study your mistakes. Think about them and what you did wrong. Often, they provide the best form of education your money can buy. You paid dearly for them. Don't let them go by without detailed scrutiny, lest their lessons be lost.

Tues Apr 17 Make that 5 in a row

With today's gap n go action, the 1st hour trend was again explosive and persistent, and opposite to yesterday's initial move. However, yesterday's late morning reversal did, in fact, leave a 'tell' for today's action, something the previous days' early impulse moves did not enjoy. And today, there were at least some better swings and a more readily identifiable breakout trigger with which to get in trend sync.

Mon, Apr 16 Tornado Season in the Markets

A Persistent Trend Model is one that quickly establishes a trend direction.... and stays in that direction, often making a near vertical move in the 1st hour, and either
consolidates the rest of the day, or continues grinding on into that same trend. Although the net excursion distance is often impressive for the entire day, the trade entry opportunities are often scant, as pullbacks are shallow, and further breakouts / breakdowns come into overbought / oversold territory. Frequency of Persistent trends can be as little as 2 per month. Occasionally, at the end of bull market dips, they come back to back, but in the opposite directions. In the last four days, there are been 4 such initial trends that met a large initial 1st hour excursion in volatile fashion. Most likely, volatility will settle down a bit and a more normal underlying trend revealed. It is said that volatile swings often come at places where the larger daily frame / weekly trend is trying to reverse.

Wed Apr 4, Action speaks louder than.....

And today's action was speaking unfortunately loud. Although a decent sell signal appeared to get in sync with the decline, the action to the downside was brutally choppy. Thus only a small gain. Thereafter, two buy signals were stp'd out with small losses as some bottom reversal signals began to appear. Out of caution, repeated turn signals that fail are a good sign to just step aside and let the bottom come and go. Retests often appear that are clearer to read. Today, any such retest signals would be coming after the 1st frame of the day. Valhalla Futures only trades the 1st frame, until about 11:15am ET US.

Mon Apr 2 Brain freeze

More often than not, the price reaction to the 10am econ reports is a fade, and does not agree with the true underlying trend of the day. Today, however, the news and the underlying trend fed on each other, and we made a mistake when attempting to fade it too soon. There was also a subsequent trigger that would have tripped us into the trend for as least the last leg of the morning session, but following on a loss, we erred on the side of caution and let it go by. One of the most important qualities for a trader to exhibit is the ability to recover from a bad trade when the next valid trade signal appears. Study your mistakes in the market, and try to recall the mental state you were in when you made them. Mistakes can be the most valuable lessons of your trading education....

Sometimes, it's a real rodeo in the futures ring. Earliest signal today came in the NQ to sell short. But because my entries were a bit early, they were stopped out only to see the shorts pay off so well minutes later. Welcome to trading futures. Two good signals in the TF a short while later, however, and we were green again on the day.... Later in the day, as prices slowly recovered from the morning selling to a resistance zone, we took another short and got stopped out. Mon, Mar 26 Gap Up

It is a popular thing in many trade rooms to fade gaps on various triggers sometime after the opening. This trader has never found that play consistent. In fact, the early attempts to closing the gap, if any, are usually opportunities to trade in the gap's direction. In fact, in today's market action, we called a buy in the TF just lower than price actually fell to initially, but were left unfilled before prices exploded back upward into the day's bull trend. This left us shorting the first full structured moves in the Dow and Russell mini futures for small, counter-trend gains. Other buy opps came later in the day after our more narrow 1st time frame trading window. Come join us in the free chat room to follow these trades as they are called.

Thurs Mar 22 Test-n-Reject

Serial Sequent Wave Method helped identify that the early trend up was faux and would be followed by an impulse move lower. That gave us our first shorts in the NQ. Stepping aside for the 10am Housing Report number was cautionary, but as it turned out, unnecessary. Two attempts after the initial breakdown to short the TF contract on bounces went unfilled, so we were left to selling into new lows. That worked once for a decent profit, but a 2nd time stopped out the shorts towards the end of the 1st time frame of the day. Thurs Feb 23 Heart is the Art of the Breakout

Nothing smarts more in trading than the profits you left on the table, or the opportunity you saw, but failed to take. The profits from early long entry signals at the LOD in the mini Russell gave us a nice start to the day as it took out the low of 2 days ago, but seemed meager in comparison to the 2nd phase of the rally towards the end of the 1st hour. I know how much it smarts because I watched my students in the chat room take the breakout play at 818.9 which I called, but then failed to take myself. ...and I was left taking counter trend crumbs when price took out the globex high from 2 nights previous. Acting on second thoughts usually suggests the Trader is not in control, and is letting the Accountant call the shots. Wed Feb 22 1st hour slow, 2nd hour go....

When the market chooses to consolidate for the first frame of the day, the desired for trend development usually occurs in the midday frame instead. But that didn't stop our rules for Sequent from giving some valid scalp signals in the mini Russell. Two latter signals early in the midday appeared on cue, but I had already closed the chat room and won't officially record having taken them myself. See arrows on chart, and

Fri Feb 17, Russell 'Oops'

A classic Larry Williams Oops opening in the Russell 2k futures today, but those don't necessarily go straight down, as any futures trader playing gaps knows. So our initial short entry was into the bounce off the early plunge....then the 2nd bounce short again, and finished with a long at support from our Pivot Ledge-Breakaway Grid™ intersecting with the a Serial Sequent™ reversal signal. After that, our True Trend Indicator continued pointing towards lower pricing, but it's Friday before a long weekend, and a quick 3+ pts gets us away from the screen after the 1st hour and helps end a good week. Thurs Feb 16 Persistent Trend Day

Always the most challenging, early pullbacks and inflection breakouts are the key to getting in sync with the trend. Today, an initial fade at the inflection level gave us 2 Russell futures points, then a breakout above it pushed us up to nearly +4. But the pullback buy opportunities stop'd us out with small losses twice and trimmed our gains back to +3.1 as the 1st frame came to an end. Wed Feb 15: Initial Collapse, then H&S Low

An initial ORB breakout pattern in the TF was posted in the traders' chat room just moments after the breakdown, so was too late to set the sell stp and capture the initial collapse. Since my policy is to take trades only AFTER posting their triggers in the room, was unable to post those quick Russell short gains. But was able to find a good initial bounce with long positions, and then finally bought the LOD after an initial stp out. We guided buyers for the Russell inverse Head & Shoulders pattern, but as we seldom trade into the midday frame, left that neckline breakout for others to take, targeting 826.5. Trade Summary:

Normally, we'd return after the Midday Frame to look for trades after the FOMC meeting. But lately, this has not produced the volatility of former days, and so left the screen for the day after the 1st frame, around 11:15am. Aug 3 2011, Return-to-Breakpoint

Whether yesterday's breakdown from previous lows behaves like a neckline from here forward, or just a lower low in some larger flag pattern remains to be seen. Today's reversal bar does not actually tell the outcome yet. It is quite common after a breakdown to revisit the break point from which it started. Thus, the E-mini Russell today returned to that breakdown point from yesterday's late PM collapse, but could go no further. That provided two entries in today's trading. An intraday futures short at the breakdown price of 772.0, with 3 points in profit taken, and a swing short in the Russell Index 3x ETF, TNA, at 65.95. Late trading threatened a stop just above that price, but did not quite reach it. Many such 1-day reversals in bear markets produce nothing, and are, in fact, the best place to take a short position. If this one has follow-through, however, a stp-loss order that works in the overnight market will take the position out. Other trades today as below....

Many traders participate in what's commonly referred to as the 'Gap Close' play. That is, they expect when the market gaps up or down to fade that action anticipating price to return to the previous day's Close. There are many triggers for this trade, but most entries come with price reversal after 5 or 10 minutes have elapsed. Using futures instead of stocks, I find the 'Gap Close' trade inconsistent at best. Instead, I look for a full structured move in the wave patterns that appear with data starting at 9:30am, regardless of whether it trades
back in the direction of the gap, or trades with that gap direction. Serial Sequent is a wave analysis method unlike that of Elliott Wave, and is the single most accurate way to determine potential reversals I've ever encountered.

Maybe it's the crisp way the market tends to bounce off support / resistance numbers, and the way reversals come more sharply, but in general my trading
results tend to be far better in the 1st frame of the day from 9:30am to about 11:15am, than at any other time later in the day. I generally don't trade in
the midday session at all. The last frame, from the 2:30pm Transition Time until the close can produce results similar to the AM frame, but often does no better than the midday.

Sometimes the Day Model of one day is predictive of that of the next. Yesterday's deep gap down opening was characterized by the obvious TF relative strength. Today that action was mimic'd, at least initially. Ergo, buying against the lows and exiting into the bounces was the strategy again today. And although the TF relative strength failed to produce the same kind of recovery reversal, the strategy worked initially with handsome bounces and decent profits anyway.

Divergence is a powerful tool. The two best trades today, both longs, came with strong divergence signals. The first was just a few ticks from the LOD in the TF contract in early selling. The YM and ES both were busy making full structured moves. But the TF, often the smarter, checked up and held just above its low established along side the YM and ES two waves earlier. Add some big size bids showing in TF at that level, and the buy was the proverbial silver platter. The second buy came later, on a pullback, after the big initial recovery rally from those lows. Just at the moment of perceived opportunity, around 10:28am ET, the YM again made a new LOD, this time solo, while the TF spiked down into a bit of a vacuum. It bounded back up nearly four points in just a few minutes.

The previous format for FOMC was maximum anticipation and
immediate release, when the rate adjustments were scheduled
for 2:15pm. The 12:30pm release throws a bit of water
on that, as it seems to be more of a non-event now. And it
is further muddied by an endless drone on by Fed Chief Bernanke,
who comes on with a press conference at 2:15pm, where instead
of an immediate burst of energy, prices vacillate to the tune
of his remarks. Take me back to the previous format, please.

There are few day models harder trade in than the Persistent Trend Day. We all recognize it when we see it, but not usually until it is well into its trend. Then the feeling that it's just too late to participate overwhelms, and we are left with counter trend trade entries, often leading to frustrating stp-outs. The best entry--and often the only one all day, often comes midday as price drifts back to important resistance. Once hit, action recovers the trend and proceeds onto new price extremes. Today's was classic. And although I managed to counter trend trade into a small profit, I'm not proud of it. And as for that one good opportunity to get in sync on a midday pullback? ....I was away from the screen, having wore myself out trying to stay afloat with counter-trend trades all morning.
