Again, the best trade opportunities did not show up until the 2nd Frame, and this time, since I was only using 3-lot Micro's for the losing trades of the 1st Frame, the appearance of a single, near perfect Trade Entry Model appeared to end the protracted decline from the high of the 1st Frame.   And although I was a bit jittery with it, and dispensed with it at an initial exhaustion area, it was enough to make the day worth while attending.    ...and the volatility in current conditions is already extreme enough, even in the Midday Frame, not to need the added juice of an FOMC Rate report.

Stepping into the Stock Index Futures Markets in this kind of volatility has to be described as reckless.  The intraday swings are so wide that most normal means of measuring extremes and exhaustion blow past all the conventional trade entry signals usually associated with them.   Today, as with so many of recent days, I found myself hitting maximum allowable losses before the end of the 1st frame..    and then found some remarkable entries that allowed a full recovery as the midday frame began to take hold.

I had reckoned this phenom would fade, and things settle back down to the 1st frame still being the best to trade, but it seems this stage of extreme volatility is here to stay for awhile.    The solution will be to pare down from using even 5 micro's to just 3 in the 1st frame, and then take a look at going back to 5, or even using the E-mini's in the Midday frame, as I did last week, under similar circumstances.

Another very rough time for the accuracy of trade signals in the 1st Frame.   And this time, afternoon trading didn't quite even get trade results back to break even, let alone the kind of profit/loss reversal equity reversal seen from Friday's PM session trading.

All this begs the question of why I continue to trade the 1st Frame under current market conditions...    At the moment, the reason is because--as written about in the Journal on Friday, the YinYang concept in market activity should soon reverse back to the better trading to occur in the 1st Frame, and the poorer in the 2nd...     ...but we'll see how it goes tomorrow...

There is an oriental concept called YinYang that describes opposites that fit into each in alternates.  That phenom bears out in several market technical concepts with surprising regularity.  If the first trend direction tends to be false, the 2nd trend direction tends to be true.  If the 1st Frame of the day is choppy and irregular, then 2nd tends to be impulsive and crisp.  Just so then, trade entry opportunities will often appear in strings whose chances of success are very low for one set of signals, and then later the alternate string will appear with such confluence that larger size positions within a trade plan are invited.

Just so did the trade opportunities appear today.   After a brutal set of entries produced nothing but stop-outs, a pause in my own initiatives allowed the market to move from one phase to another.    And still present in front of the screen as the Noon Hour time marker approached, I was able to witness a set of trade signals with such broadly disparate technical confluence as to allow me to switch from trading the Nasdaq micro's to trading the Nasdaq E-mini's again, which are 10 times the value.... and the risk.    And the signals, once into this Yang period, also appeared clearly in both directions, making it as inviting to flip from short to long and back again, as the signals appeared.   Thus an ugly losing day was turned nicely into a very profitable day by just being there for the Yang...

For some examples of the various technical elements that were exposed as trade entry elements today, such as the Noon Hour time marker and the Rule of Alternation (YinYang), I refer you to the book, Pivots, Patterns and Intraday Swing Trades, available on line by this author.

Lately, the best trades, and those that exceeded my 1st Frame losses, all appeared in the Midday and Last Hour Frames.  Today was no exception, but in order to execute afternoon trades, you actually have to be in front of the screen when they appear.   Unlike the days of my youth, I am no longer able to sit in front of the screen all day.  My back forbids it, and it calls me out for a long daily walk.
For a review of the day's main time frames, the time markers, and midday chart patterns that often reveal midday trade signals, refer to the book Pivots, Patterns and Intraday Swing Signals, available online.

A modest profit goal of +$500 for 1st Frame session trading belies two things in extreme volatility.  First, it hardly measures the potential such volatility can deliver if position signals can be entered successfully, and secondly, it may encapsulate a far too small stop-loss allotment to survive entry volatility whips these same days tend to demonstrate.

My 1st Frame entries were so overwhelmed by normal exhaustion and grid level readings that I was down some $800 before I could push myself away from the screen.    But that made the 2nd Frame of the day, normally a kind of doldrums of volatility about the right temperature to use normal 1st Frame techniques.   And a beautiful set of Serial Sequent fractal algorithms, known as the 3rd Substitute Sequent, appeared perfectly in confluence with the Last Hour Transition Time Marker, which put the icing on the cake of an excellent entry opportunity.

That created an equity swing for the day from -$800 to +$450.  This is not the strategy that should be employed to arrive at a day's profit goal.  I violated my maximum loss of -500 even to return to trading.  But in this environment, shifting to the lower volatility Midday and Last Hour frames might be necessary for survival, and I probably should have simply sat out the 1st Frame today altogether....

The ValhallaFutures Rule of Alnternation (not to be confused with an Elliott Wave rule of the same name) says that big waves follow small waves in the trend, and vice-a-versa.  So if part of your Trade Entry Concept is a momentum signal that has still not climaxed, but finally does so in a trend where small waves characterized the early part of the trend, you find your self trying to fade the arrival of the anticipated momentum signals in the midst of the trend's big waves--and in this environment, big wave are REALLY big, and can swallow up the size of your maximum affordable stop-loss risks like a 80's PacMan game.

Today was just such a day.   And if I still hadn't been in front of the screen posting my trades as the Noon Hour approached, I would have missed the seldom-seen but highly consistent signal from our Fractal Algorithm, Serial Sequent, we call the 2nd Half Sequent, which gratefully cut my losses in half to at least more tolerable level.

Have a set of Trade Entry Rules and a set of Money Management Rules to accompany all the technical rules necessary to have a methodology in the first place.   This is your Trading Plan.   Stick to your Trading Plan and limit your losses on losing days to about the same dollar figure you use as a daily profit target, and you'll at least survive from day to day and week to week, even when the volatility and trend extension is overwhelming.

Being down 5 bills in order to end up +2 bills is not the route you want to take getting to a positive day.   For the last weeks, it's been treading some very bifurcated waters, only to end up with a draw on most days.   But it is what it is.   These are easily the most volatile markets I've ever traded, and I've been doing this for years.   Perhaps I'll get better at it...  or this old dog is out of tricks to learn...

Another week treading water, as losses wash out gains trying to find swings.   Persistent grind and 'irrational exuberance' followed by cliff drop liquidations do not make for good intraday swing signals.    ...too many stop-outs.   But we'll stay with it, as no market condition ever persists for long.    In the meantime, this one has its challenges indeed.

Another day playing it close to the vest, but can at least say all week was profitable.  Want to wish a great July 4th and celebration for this great nation, despite what the horrible deterioration on the political and policy front.   We're still the greatest nation on earth because we have the Constitution behind us....      all the best...

We can keep a reasonably tolerable view of all four of the major stock index futures contracts.   The relationship between them often lends important trend and reversal information throughout the 1st frame.   All this is complicated, however, by the inconsistency of the vice-a-versa action, the bifurcation in trend direction between these major market sectors.
This phenom is especially prevalent at market highs, where a frothy, rolling rotation continues to bubble up in sector alternation.   The odd thing thing is, on challenging days in the action, as was today, precise signals can still show up in at least one of the four index contracts, and often remains consistent in its own world all morning.

But trading is emotional.   There is a strong tendency to keep trying in the contract you are being stopped out of in the mistaken belief that these stop-outs may actually be teaching you something about impending trend with each stop-out along the way.

Instead, it is wiser to hone in on the contract lending consistency to its signalling and drop interest in the one you are being pulled into.   The market is not there as a puzzle for you to figure out.   That is the Analyst talking.   You are the Trader.  Your job is to execute.
