There is an oriental concept called YinYang that describes opposites that fit into each in alternates.  That phenom bears out in several market technical concepts with surprising regularity.  If the first trend direction tends to be false, the 2nd trend direction tends to be true.  If the 1st Frame of the day is choppy and irregular, then 2nd tends to be impulsive and crisp.  Just so then, trade entry opportunities will often appear in strings whose chances of success are very low for one set of signals, and then later the alternate string will appear with such confluence that larger size positions within a trade plan are invited.

Just so did the trade opportunities appear today.   After a brutal set of entries produced nothing but stop-outs, a pause in my own initiatives allowed the market to move from one phase to another.    And still present in front of the screen as the Noon Hour time marker approached, I was able to witness a set of trade signals with such broadly disparate technical confluence as to allow me to switch from trading the Nasdaq micro's to trading the Nasdaq E-mini's again, which are 10 times the value.... and the risk.    And the signals, once into this Yang period, also appeared clearly in both directions, making it as inviting to flip from short to long and back again, as the signals appeared.   Thus an ugly losing day was turned nicely into a very profitable day by just being there for the Yang...

For some examples of the various technical elements that were exposed as trade entry elements today, such as the Noon Hour time marker and the Rule of Alternation (YinYang), I refer you to the book, Pivots, Patterns and Intraday Swing Trades, available on line by this author.

Lately, the best trades, and those that exceeded my 1st Frame losses, all appeared in the Midday and Last Hour Frames.  Today was no exception, but in order to execute afternoon trades, you actually have to be in front of the screen when they appear.   Unlike the days of my youth, I am no longer able to sit in front of the screen all day.  My back forbids it, and it calls me out for a long daily walk.
For a review of the day's main time frames, the time markers, and midday chart patterns that often reveal midday trade signals, refer to the book Pivots, Patterns and Intraday Swing Signals, available online.

A modest profit goal of +$500 for 1st Frame session trading belies two things in extreme volatility.  First, it hardly measures the potential such volatility can deliver if position signals can be entered successfully, and secondly, it may encapsulate a far too small stop-loss allotment to survive entry volatility whips these same days tend to demonstrate.

My 1st Frame entries were so overwhelmed by normal exhaustion and grid level readings that I was down some $800 before I could push myself away from the screen.    But that made the 2nd Frame of the day, normally a kind of doldrums of volatility about the right temperature to use normal 1st Frame techniques.   And a beautiful set of Serial Sequent fractal algorithms, known as the 3rd Substitute Sequent, appeared perfectly in confluence with the Last Hour Transition Time Marker, which put the icing on the cake of an excellent entry opportunity.

That created an equity swing for the day from -$800 to +$450.  This is not the strategy that should be employed to arrive at a day's profit goal.  I violated my maximum loss of -500 even to return to trading.  But in this environment, shifting to the lower volatility Midday and Last Hour frames might be necessary for survival, and I probably should have simply sat out the 1st Frame today altogether....

The ValhallaFutures Rule of Alnternation (not to be confused with an Elliott Wave rule of the same name) says that big waves follow small waves in the trend, and vice-a-versa.  So if part of your Trade Entry Concept is a momentum signal that has still not climaxed, but finally does so in a trend where small waves characterized the early part of the trend, you find your self trying to fade the arrival of the anticipated momentum signals in the midst of the trend's big waves--and in this environment, big wave are REALLY big, and can swallow up the size of your maximum affordable stop-loss risks like a 80's PacMan game.

Today was just such a day.   And if I still hadn't been in front of the screen posting my trades as the Noon Hour approached, I would have missed the seldom-seen but highly consistent signal from our Fractal Algorithm, Serial Sequent, we call the 2nd Half Sequent, which gratefully cut my losses in half to at least more tolerable level.

Have a set of Trade Entry Rules and a set of Money Management Rules to accompany all the technical rules necessary to have a methodology in the first place.   This is your Trading Plan.   Stick to your Trading Plan and limit your losses on losing days to about the same dollar figure you use as a daily profit target, and you'll at least survive from day to day and week to week, even when the volatility and trend extension is overwhelming.

Being down 5 bills in order to end up +2 bills is not the route you want to take getting to a positive day.   For the last weeks, it's been treading some very bifurcated waters, only to end up with a draw on most days.   But it is what it is.   These are easily the most volatile markets I've ever traded, and I've been doing this for years.   Perhaps I'll get better at it...  or this old dog is out of tricks to learn...

Another week treading water, as losses wash out gains trying to find swings.   Persistent grind and 'irrational exuberance' followed by cliff drop liquidations do not make for good intraday swing signals.    ...too many stop-outs.   But we'll stay with it, as no market condition ever persists for long.    In the meantime, this one has its challenges indeed.

We can keep a reasonably tolerable view of all four of the major stock index futures contracts.   The relationship between them often lends important trend and reversal information throughout the 1st frame.   All this is complicated, however, by the inconsistency of the vice-a-versa action, the bifurcation in trend direction between these major market sectors.
This phenom is especially prevalent at market highs, where a frothy, rolling rotation continues to bubble up in sector alternation.   The odd thing thing is, on challenging days in the action, as was today, precise signals can still show up in at least one of the four index contracts, and often remains consistent in its own world all morning.

But trading is emotional.   There is a strong tendency to keep trying in the contract you are being stopped out of in the mistaken belief that these stop-outs may actually be teaching you something about impending trend with each stop-out along the way.

Instead, it is wiser to hone in on the contract lending consistency to its signalling and drop interest in the one you are being pulled into.   The market is not there as a puzzle for you to figure out.   That is the Analyst talking.   You are the Trader.  Your job is to execute.

Sometimes, after some losing days, just narrowing your goals can bring you into tighter focus.    After reaching just 50% of goal these past two days, I ducked further trade calls so as to be sure and finish the day ahead.    Eventually, I'll be willing to continue taking risks again until my minimum goal of 5 bills is attained.   But in the meantime, I'm just taking it easy, and quitting while ahead.

"Most of the problems we face in our trading are those that are found in our heads."  ...or so said someone in the foreword of a book on trading.   But knowing that doesn't necessarily make it any easier to overcome.   And one aspect of clawing your way out of a losing period is the importance of putting your errors and the markets that accompanied them well behind you.   If not, then you're likely to skip taking the opportunities as they present themselves in order to avoid more mistakes--and suffer the consequences to your bottom line.    For as important it is to contain the losses of your bad trades is the necessity to take those opportunities that fall within your Trade Plan when they present themselves.

...and a good weekend to all...

A tiny victory in SIM mode following 2 losing days allows me out of the penalty box, but not with much enthusiasm.  One potentially profitable trade in the RTY was missed on slow reactions.   You can't be afraid of making mistakes in the fast moving futures markets.  Trades wait for no one.

Two losing days in a row for my trading.   That puts me into the penalty box for tomorrow, and so I must trade in Simulator mode.   Most likely following this tremendous buying spike across the board, tomorrow will be a day of consolidation and 1st Frame swings, instead of vertical impulse action.

Vertical markets are usually the most challenging.  ...especially those that start off dull, and therefore give you little if any indication that breakouts will be something better than stop-outs.   ...and short covering rallies  have a special flavor all their own.   Their are few if any pullbacks, and the breakouts that do work tend to come at the end, when the market is already viewed as overheated by most momentum studies, and therefore deemed too late to participate.

Keep a tight handle on losses, and the days of swings and measured moves will return for intraday trading.

The action of the Nasdaq can draw you in like moths to a flame, and although I did well with using 5-lot micro's today, I would have actually profited more by trading the far less volatile Russell 2k using its E-mini contract.   However, with the NQ volatilty you do get the added benefit of peak momentum signals, and full grid level exhaustion trips.   In the RTY, on those appraised entry reversals, price continually came up shy of both our TTI Momentum and Pivot-Exhaustion Grid signals to fulfill full Technical Event Entry Concepts.   In other words, GoldieLocks would not have been happy with bending her rules as to her just-right temperature gauge.

You could find no better example of index bifurcation than in today's NQ and Russell 2k action.   Since we trip over medical terms like that, we just call it vice-a-versa,  or just versus play, for short.   Just study the smallest time frames in the NQ and RTY contracts for the 1st Frame of the day, and you'll quickly see what is meant.   For nearly every upward reaction in the NQ, there was a corresponding reaction downward for the RTY, and then that game became prominent again, but in the opposite direction as reversals in both contracts took hold as the noon hour approached.

And yet, at other times, they were in complete sync....all while the big cap ES and YM mostly just sat there to tread water--until they didn't.

You can always lend the excuse that it was FOMC day, and though even though scheduled for the Midday Frame, 1st Frame action is still under affect.

I shall make no such excuse for my own trading today, as two prominent winning trades were fumbled at the keyboard, one each in RTY and NQ, that would have at least kept me treading water  better until the end of the 1st Frame.

Limit your losses on challenging days.   Tomorrow is just around the corner.

As per comments regarding Financial Juice, it seems everyone else but me is still getting a streaming voice narration of pending econ news events, and that it must be something with my browser that is now in conflict....

sheesh...  computers...    ya can't live with 'em, and it seems apparently that it looks bad to the neighbors if you're caught repeatedly backing up over one at the end of your driveway in your Audi Allroad...

Sometimes just not losing two days in a row is a small victory unto itself.   And just so, as a Trade Plan Behavior Stop demands I begin the third day on the Simulator, if the previous two days were indeed losers.    But otherwise, I'm still smarting from the trades I missed yesterday from failing to shake my 'bull on pullbacks' trend prejudice.

I really missed the Financial Juice website's no-longer-active voice narration today, where it would have been nice to have had streaming headline voice coaching me in my ears a warning that the highly anticipated Michigan Sentiment numbers were to be delayed 45 minutes.

If anyone knows of a substitute talking econ headline news to replace my now silent Financial Juice, please email me at will@valhallafutures.com

To say such days as today fall into the extreme volatility is only to state the obvious.  But more, to capture a pullback within a perceived trend is to be fooled into thinking pullbacks are not in fact new, true trends.  There are no "pullbacks".   There are only long and super over-extending true trends. Therefore, one must learn to identify the middle ground where normal pullbacks might reside as breakout entry triggers on the way into the new over-extended extremes of the second fresh trend.

Try putting that into the Trade Plan of the majority of trading days and your trading account will disappear quickly.   Breakouts are tricky as it is on any day.  But to succeed with breakouts on days like today, you have to learn the skills necessary to shake off the trend prejudice that develops from the pure amazement at the trend your ego has just missed.   "I have to at least get a piece of it", your mind is saying.  "Or how else can I possibly save face?"

And just so is the internal opposition towards using these middle areas coming back down into the "false pullback" as triggers for the new, true trend about to unfold with equal but in fact far greater amazement than the trend you just missed.

It would all be rather just amusing if it weren't for the fact that a cold, mechanical treatment of the Inflection Breakouts offered by your pet technical analysis tool, Serial Sequent Fractal Algorithm had not given you the exact places in that foreboding middle ground to trigger breakout entries into the budding new trend.    "Is there any more room on your face for mud?" was the only question left residing for my late morning coffee.

Needless to say, some of the most challenging action we've yet faced in what is historically the most volatile market in history.   Have a maximum loss figure for a behavioral stop, just like you have a profit goal for the Frame.   If x number of days of max losses in a row, and/or in a week, pull out of your cash account and go into simulator mode.   There is no shame in curtailing trades when the action override your entry targets and stop-loss ATM's.  No amount of the reappearance of fresh technical entry signals should ever override your behavioral stop-loss limits.    ....Survive to continue trading...

The market action tends to train you to do exactly the wrong things at the wrong time.  Good case in point today was my initial management of the ORB breakdown play into the first selling trend.   The signal of an ORB pennant in the MNQ was clear.   I ignored the emotional fear of calling and taking that trade despite the deep gap price started out with.   But I was Moses with my stop placement thereafter, and choked it down to a small stop once it went my direction about 10 points.   The best rule for changing a stop is the arrival and then survival of a retest back to the breakout point.   But I ignored that, and rushed to move my stop because I didn't have faith in plan management rules.

After a string of 6 days of about breakeven, I quit with a small profit just to claim a victory, in what have become the most volatile markets in history..     ...at least we're having fun.

Trading is full of imperfect execution.   ...both in Technical Event Confluence, and in target acquisition.   But even if your day if full of comprise, a Trade Plan still keeps your impulses and imperfect judgements intact if it is maintained with some discipline.

In general, a Trade Plan should keep you away from the crowd.  Thus, I rely on Signal Confirmation, not Price Confirmation via pattern or bar pattern triggers, sometimes referred to as 'setups'.    Awaiting trend confirmation almost always puts you in with the majority.   The majority use some variation of the original Charles Drummond l-2-3 pattern trigger, made famous by Ken Roberts and his use of it the physical commodities, and the Joe Ross renaming it as the Ross Hook in the smaller time frames for intraday futures trading.  (Although it uses a different method, Mark Fisher's ACBD 15 min OR can be included in general as a breakout system that relies on price confirmation, but the stop-outs are even more brutal to the bank account. It's avoidance of stop-outs relies on the presence of the Persistent Trend Day pattern, a day model that occurs roughly only some 4 days out of the 21 day trading month. )

Most of the time this kind of trigger-into-trend confirmation is nothing more than the market reloading itself with traders who have freshly hooked themselves into positions in the wrong direction.  Thus the market is fed further as these traders are subsequently stopped out.

Instead, if you consider that confirmation can come alternatively as disparate technical signals arriving in confluence at certain places of exhaustion--both in structure and in momentum, then the places deeper into the reversal where so those using techniques listed above will be finally tripped into the market on the assumption of reversal confirmation, can be used to exit partial positions by those of us who chose Signal Confirmation instead of Price Confirmation as our entry triggers.  We're getting part of our position out as profits where these breakout traders are just getting in.  This keeps us well out of the crowded company of 90% of the majority of traders.

But on days when a true confluence of technical events afford clear entry opportunities, those of us looking for extremes to fade still suffer our share of stop-outs, and then rely on trade entry concepts that are, for the most part, incomplete as to the desired totality of possible confluence.

It's once again Memorial Day...  a time to remember all those who have come before, and especially those who fell, making the ultimate sacrifice that the rest of us could enjoy the benefits of freedom, here in the greatest nation the history of civilization has yet produced.  I salute them all, and proclaim with them loudly "Freedom First!!!"  There is no peace without it.    ...and God bless all ....

Three frustrating days in a row for my trading.   And it seems those three days can claim about the same faults to my trading each time.   And although the last two days were about net break-even in the P&L column, it's always the profitable trades you fail to take rather than the losing trades you make that bother you the most.

The MNQ is a bit notorious for over-spill at the turning points.   It takes the form of liquid mercury, and so earns that action nick-name description.   But if all other elements to the trade model are, in fact, present and in place at those general areas, there is one final positioning allowance in my Trade Plan that would allow me to re-enter one final time.  I refer to it as 'Lifting your position with an order at stop-out.'   And it can be described thus: Instead of extending your stop endlessly at this mercurial turning points, when Momentum, Exhaustion Grid and the fractal algorithm Serial Sequent are all in place, and yet another spike of unpredictable extent might take you out of position, keep your stop in tight.  Allow the stop-out, and simply witness the extend of that next price spike.   If it continues well above current action, do nothing, and await further algorithm signals as price structure proceeds.  But if instead, this extra breakout is a dud, have a stop to enter at about the same place you had entered on in the previous order.   And if the final stop-out spike turns out to be just the over-spill necessary to ignite a true reversal, you are back in the trade in the intended direction.   Use the extent of this final price spike as your stop-loss of the re-entered position, and trail to break-even if the reversal truly sets.

On all three of the last days, this technique would have re-positioned me for the impulsive, profit producing reversal I was so diligently trying to capture in the first place.
