You get what you deserve in the market place. It rewards good trading behavior, and punishes the bad. And it teaches you what good trading behavior is--all along the way of your personal market history observations--if only you will listen to it. One good reason for giving back those early 10 pts in NQ profits: I traded yesterday afternoon, outside the trade room, as I was in front of the screen trying work on some other projects. ...and I could do no wrong, it seemed. Made 7 bills on two clear short signals, and it apparently went right to my head. Because today, after recovering from some small early losses, I hit both RTY and NQ for some decent gains. ....and thought I could again do no wrong. Dumb. Took too many trades, traded outside my first frame parameters, and fought the obvious Persistent Trend Day Up model in NQ til I had blown the whole 10 pt NQ profit. This is a gambler's psychology, not a trader's. A Trader quits when goals and time period has arrived. A gambler doesn't quit until he's lost everything he's made....and more so. Learn to trade according to a strict Trade Plan that covers not only your Technical Event Concepts, but also your Behavior Governors. One without the other won't get you very far.

The most common of the 3 possible Day Models is Test-n-Reject. It occurs on some 80% of all trading days, and therefore increases the odds of success to positions if the Trader fades the 1st trend direction of the day. The 2nd Day Model is Persistent Trend Day. It starts off in one direction and goes....and goes....and goes. Sometimes it doesn't even give you the 1st Chance Texaco setup to gas up and get in sync with. On those days, breakouts pay the way to profits. But catching onto its presence within the early action of the 1st frame is not always an easy thing to I.D. But those most adept at flipping one's rally hat around and going with those breakouts are rewarding handsomely. The game is to partial out the position to pay for the potential break-out failure, and ride the 2nd with a trading stop or reasonable 2nd unit mechanical target. ..wait for a pause and the correctly Fractal Inflection Count, and do it all over again. Although that strategy is in my Trade Plan, I was just mentally unable to flip my hat around, and so achieved a days loss limits trying to find a significant turn. Be flexible and prepared for the surprising outcome. How do I know this is true? Because today, one of the members I was trading beside in the chat room, a student, with basically the same Trade Plan as mine, kept to his plan and took those Inflection Breakout signals that I was apparently unfit for emotionally to take myself. The consequence was that he ended up with the same numerical figure in profits for the day that I had in losses. What good is a plan if you don't trade it?

Your Trade Plan should include both the best models to fade the action as well to participate in action break-out. Especially in a bull market where a succession of lows have been taken out and popular opinion sees those broken lows as indicative of a budding bear. They are not. Broken lows are simply WorkDone, and position the market to rise on the back of shorts and long re-entries after stop-outs.

Is of interest to note that certain financial and political announcements are perceived by traders as news worthy and are taken with some apprehension, even if a calm eye eventually prevails. And yet the market unravels and regathers along the same rules it is governed by otherwise, albeit a far more exaggerated fashion. That's what trading futures is all about. It's market inefficiencies we make profits on. And Karl Marx remains proven wrong at the most casual of market examinations, just as Adam Smith's observations are proven right on any day you chose to look. And just so does the market remain in its eternal paradox. We have both much to learn from price (contrary to Marx), and yet it remains governed as if by the invisible finger of Providence (to the lasting impression of Smith). We call the 'invisible force' behind price fluctuation Serial Sequent Fractal Method, the quantum physics of price movement.

Like the 5th game of the World Series last night, I trades too many innings. The true underlying trend often is arrives in the first frame as a disguise. Today, that the disguise was more prominent in the NQ. And with that Mars launch by NQ to another set of new bull market highs came a clear short entry model, right at the top. However, the TF, which has played a good deal of catch-up to NQ's exuberance was fairly consistent in its bear leadership. These two have played a lot of vice-a-versus lately, and it definitely can complicate a set of entry signals where those entry signals depend on breadth. Which breadth do you use ...? Stay with your Plan. Entry signals will sort themselves out along with the trend, and even when that trend remains disguised by faux leadership, the combination of a target accurate Pivot / Exhaustion Grid, momentum, and the amazing fractal algorithm we call Serial Sequent can deliver pieces of the market despite the obscurity of the true underlying trend.

You enter trades on a working assumption that the Trade Entry Models you use work more often than they fail, not because you believe you know which way the market is headed. It's a subtle but critical difference. You manage those entries on the part of that assumption that acknowledges those entry models can't work all the time. Thus, you partial out to pay for the risk of the trade, and them herd cats when/if the remainder of the position goes into profits. The only thinking involved in trading is in the process of learning and compiling one's Trade Entry Models. And that is done with the cool eye of retrospective chart and indicator study--never in real time market action. Once such a trade plan is in place, you take the trades prescribed in your plan whether you 'like' them or not. Anything you don't like about the trade as it takes shape at the right edge of your video screen should be part of the Model itself, and resides there as a filter all the time. Otherwise, any apprehensions should be ignored. The Trader is a machine. The Analyst is the thinker. Put him away after the Opening Bell. He has no place in the activity of real time execution.

Sometimes volatility can be a bit overwhelming, and today's two-sided action induced me to enter shorts on the way back up too soon, having not found the signals to buy at the first frame lows. A final set of sell signals were clear and afforded decent short swings from the highs, but I was already too negative on the day to do anything but play catch-up to losses....and with too many trades and commissions, didn't quite even do that. Keep calm during moments of surprise price bursts. Regard the structure, the exhaustion grid and the momentum and just stay in the game. Cool head prevail, even if they don't always profit...

If the first trend of the day tends to be false, as the statistics of the ratio of Test-n-Reject days to Persistent Trend Days suggests, then fading the first trend of the day in favor of the 2nd has the greater chance of success as a trade entry strategy. But sometimes that turn is not easy to find, even when the concept proves out to be correct, as it certainly did today. What this often leaves you with is the feeling of strong internal pressure to capitalize on the remainder of the 1st Frame's opportunities as they appear. And if you miss the fading opportunities of the 1st trend, that pressure to participate will often show up as trade entry signals to fade new price extremes in the 2nd trend direction of the day, which will be far less likely to succeed, as it becomes the trend trend of the day. Resisting the call to take those trades can be a difficult thing. You've missed the early trades, and now you face missing the whole morning without participating... and you have a whole room of students watching you.... Today I did just that, and I was duly punished for my ego by a series of losing trades in the mini Russell. It was only a set of rules to limit losses that kept me from digging myself in deeper. Resist the Song of the Sirens. Sometimes it's better just to sit on your hands, even when faced with an audience that expects good things from you....

In futures trading, volatility can be your best friend. But first, you must have the models that allow you to see where the best opportunities will appear--in advance of their arrival. Because if you are not already there at those particular junctures of structure, price and momentum with the buy-stop or sell-stop orders to fill them, they are impossible to chase. But if filled at those junctures, you'll be exiting your trade at their default dollar targets when other traders are just thinking about getting in. Stay focused.

The market tends to 'train' you into doing just the wrong thing at the wrong time. Take the NQ today. Having been trained by recent action that the NQ had lost its bull luster, I ignored both the buy signals at the bottom, and the excellent breakout signals higher up, at the Sequent Inflection levels, well in advance of the vertical explosion. In fact, it was further training to avoid the NQ by virtue of just how much time it sat at inflection level before exploding that further seduced me into thinking the sidelines in the NQ were the right place to be. Ha! ...and so I was left scalping the mini Russell while the subsequent NQ fireworks dropped my jaw. As Heraclitus reminds us, "Expect the unexpected."

Occasionally someone asks me: Why do you only trade the 1st Frame of the day? ....because usually-although unlike today--the first frame is the most volatile, and volatility is what I want. It matches my trading plan models. They are seldom fulfilled without volatility. And if the glove don't fit....I can't commit....

Today contracts roll to Dec and we say goodbye to the ICE exchange... Adios....gratias Dios. If you haven't already done so, please send a brief email to any of the below addresses asking for a combined futures history for the Russell 2000 Stock Index, under is various tenures: first at the CME under symbol ER (or was it ER2 ?...how quickly we forget), then at the NYBOT/ICE under "TF" and now back again at the CME under the clumsy acronym "RTY". No one will budge until they get pressure... and yes, those combined histories ARE THE SAME CONTRACT data stream. A rose by any other name....

Welcome back to the markets. ...and goodbye ICE....good riddance. I'll find somewhere else to trade gold futures.... assuming I ever really want to again...

Trading the Russell 2000 is still the sweetest music on the board... but couldn't CME have come up with a better contract symbol.... I mean, wouldn't renaming it ER be a bit of sweet revenge..? And when I'm invited back to sit in on the next CME Product Release meeting..... uh huhm... next week, I think.... I'm also going to recommend they take the contract size back to $100.00 per pt. All for the motion, say aye....

But there is one thing you can all do. Send a message to CQG or NinjaTrader or IB LLC or whomever,
and plead sincerely for historical RTY data that is inclusive of not only the TF ICE history, but also of the ER CME history, so that we can have long term charts that visualize price peaks and troughs in parallel with those of the ES, YM and NQ contracts. I was actually told by someone at Ninjatrader that "we can't do that. they aren't the same contract". Really ? The Russell 2000 isn't the Russell 2000, regardless of what symbol is attached to the nearby futures month or what futures exchange has leased the rights to host its servers? Well, ....what do you expect. They're not traders.... but even that bit of fundamental understanding should be obvious to them all. Plesse plead the case at:
support@ampfutures.com
Info@ninjatraderecosystem.com
support@kinetick.com
https://www.cqg.com/support
https://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/index.php?f=customerService&p=email

and respond promptly with any nonsensical replies that the RTY contract "is not the same contract"
as was the ER or TF. ...pure nonsense and a very convenient but erroneous excuse....

Mon Jul 17 Begin Extended Vacation

We will assume trading again in the first week of September. Nothing unusual in this schedule, as we have taken similar breaks in the past during the late summer months. Good trading to those who continue...

I will be taking a month off from the markets for the rest of July and half of August. Good trading to all still at it... Although the wretched ICE exchange still has the mini Russell volume in the TF contract, that will come to a definitive end as the Sep contracts expire and the recapture of that instrument by CME Globex under the new symbol RTY takes its inevitable hold. Long live the CME....!!

for those trading the TF....the Russell moves back to the CME on Monday, Jul 10. ICE Sep contracts continue to trade in tandem until expiration, so there's no panic to get set up. CME streaming data feed for the Russell is only an additional $5.00. Contact your broker to verify the new contract symbol and for subscription. Unfortunately, the contract size will be maintained at $5.00 per tick,a recent change by the ICE, instead of the old CME size of $10.00.

The first trend of the day often fails, and its turn becomes the 2nd and truer trend of the 1st Frame. And so it is that I try so hard to I.D. that early turn and position accordingly. What I've always noticed about missing that turn (early stop outs in both the YM and NQ) is an emotional reaction to participating in the outcome of that 2nd trend, drawing you back into to trying to find the turn of the 2nd trend, long before it has finally taken its due course. So it was today, despite the fact that I've seen this so many times before, and should be able to recognize an emotional state taking over in stead of a better qualified trade model entries. An interesting complication of note worthiness today was the initial bullish divergence in both the Big Caps and the Russell Mid-Caps, which both held relative strength into early 2nd Trend buy signals while the NQ exhibited a more full mini-crash. Thus, the action helped draw me into incorrectly to fading the development of the 2nd trend instead of properly identifying the inflection levels from which I could have captured their 'catch-up' collapse and participated in that 2nd trend. Stay alert. There is often one sector leading the way that seems well out of sync with the others. That's the true cognoscenti in the market place. There is no other. Don't be discouraged or embarrassed at being stopped out at the clean turn of the 1st trend. If your attentive, there may be other ways left to participate, no doubt of lessor glory, but not necessarily at lessor profits than to have caught the leader at the initial turn.

Grinding action can really draw you in. A climax is expected at every over-bought resistance level, and yet it won't break. Today I lost half of the 1st frame profits trying to find a sharp TF break into the 2nd frame. When it finally came, I was just trying to get back my loses, and thus did not milk the excursion of even half what it was worth. consolation prize was that I held a single NQ short contract much longer, but netted very little better than I already had at the end of the 1st frame...
If you're caught in a grinding trend, expect that it will be fed by opinions exactly like yours. Each premature short position only helping to float the grind further. Not until market action has cleared all those traders out who were just to smart to be fooled by the grind will prices finally crack, frustrating the majority, just as the market is designed to do.

Sometimes the TF can just be a bit too hot to handle. Today, volatility was extreme, at both ends of the big whiplash. Often, it's the NQ that makes the irrational extensions...and lately all to the upside. But NQ far more manageable today .... and saved me. Was able to come off simulator yesterday, with profitable calls and small net profit. But have to admit it's been a challenging week. Stay cool. Keep the behavior governors from your Trade Plan in place. Not every week can be easy, and some just seem beyond an understanding. The market is based on surprise.

Days with such extreme bifurcation challenging in an of themselves, but I only added to it with mistakes of my own. And those mistakes exacerbated even more by trying so hard not so lose two days in a row. So...I lost two days in a row. And by my Trade Plan rules, that puts me into the penalty box for the opening tomorrow. I must start on the simulator and work towards achieving either 2 of 3, or 3 of 5 wining trades before I can get back off the sim. This is a good rule, but I can't express how much I hate being in it. It's a behavior governor, and prevents running too far amuck in the account before once again establishing some rhythm. And today, it feels good just to get away from the screen...

Traders often wish for less volatility instead of more. It allows their emotions and their thinking to 'keep up' with the market. But the worse thing for trading is low volatility grinding action. In such an environment, there are few climaxes to light the way, and structure seems just to drift out of any sense of completion. Today in the TF reminded me of trading the pork bellies....many many years ago. The sole aim of trend in the pork bellie market is simply to clear out all the stops, first in one direction, then in the next. Have a loss limit. Know where you must pull all your chips. Have a trade number maximum. At some point, it's just no longer worth it. Not every day is good for trading. Tomorrow is another day.

Many, many years ago (I started trading futures in 1979) I took training in the S&P pit. It didn't take me long before I realized how unfit I was for the ordeal of the noise and the crowd. However, I did learn something very important that surprised me about pit traders. They tend to trade around the edges. If you relayed to them the axiom from the basic traders rule book that warns never to sell a new high or buy a new low, they'd just laugh at you. That's where they spend most of their time. And since many new traders believe the market is supposed to benefit them with a trend, trying to first define how a trend is determined and then trade only in that pre-determined direction is the main thrust of their efforts. And indeed, if most days were of the Persistent Trend Day model, the actions of taking breakouts in the perceived trend direction or buying narrow pullbacks to that trend would succeed on a regular basis. But it does not. Most days consolidate, correct, swing and overlap whatever trend can be perceived in previous action. So when I discovered Serial Sequent as the tool most likely to identify those breakouts that would fail, I looked for the extremes to trade into, fading the breakout as the market relaxes, and riding the reversal of climax action back in the opposing direction. That put me in sync with the market's action on some 80% of trading days. And once the technique of using rising sell-stops as entries for shorts and falling buy-stops as entries for longs became natural, catching fills as the market broke 'can't break' climax zones became common. Before that, I never knew such fills were possible. And even now, I'll come across the over-educated student who still insists they are not. ...oh, but how inflexible we become in our ways...

Breadth and divergence can be very tricky. Sometimes the TF contract can be a good 'tell' as to the market's eventual intentions. But leadership can take turns. And in the give in take of a game of tug-a-war, one side can get dragged into playing catch-up to the other before getting its footing and regaining the upper hand. However, my early shorts in the TF today were a bit excessive. I lacked patience and needed just a bit more of a wait-n-see aspect to the development. But what's worst of all, is how many times this has happened to me. Lessons are hard to learn..... Stay focused. Learn from your mistakes.

Most of my losing days are associated with large divergences between the indices. If it's the NQ going one way, the TF is going the other. The larger frame charts have told this story well over the last few months, and is echoed down into the lowest time frames in tandem. Sometimes, the best strategy is just to take both signals, even if it puts you into opposing positions. One will surely fail eventually. The problem is, one failing does not assure that the other will succeed, as opposing trend directions often produce very choppy, stutter-step action. Therefore, you can lose in both...
So, on such days of obvious divergence in trend, keep your loses small, reduce your frequency of trades and your trade size. Some days are better trading than others....

The most obvious mistakes we make in trading usually involved an flaw in our attitudes about trading itself. We must be open to what the market is telling us, and accept this condition without reserve. It's not about what WE want to do, it's about what the market is telling us it INTENDS to do. Today, the story was being told in the NQ with the first few swings of the day with such signal precision as to accomplish our entire 1st Frame trade goal within the initial NQ swings. But we 'like' the TF contract. ...and because our ego believes it will always be able to decipher and use the TF within our Trade Plan framework, we will beat our heads against it's trend persistence and super-volatility no matter how much money it costs us in order to prove it. "It's there, I'm sure of it. The TF is not bigger than me. I'll stay without despite any indication otherwise until I get my losses back and show the profits I came here to make", our actions seem to say. But this is not the Trader. He's indifferent to which contract he uses. His opportunity assessments have no such prejudice. These are attitudes of our Analyst and Account. The former can't admit he's wrong about this current insights, and the Accountant insists we trade exactly what we've lost so that we recover exactly the same dollars we lost. We might as well call them Stupid and Stubborn. Trade what's in front of you. Your money doesn't care in what vehicle it arrives. Your Trade Plan accounts for such diversification of entry models. It's just your head that's in the way. Examine your Plan. Trading your Plan is accepting the hear and the now. Be the market.

A critical signal juncture came today some minutes after the opening, just as I was getting to my screen late for the day. Maybe that's my excuse for not wrapping my head around the short signal, and using poor partial entry model signals for trying to fade that early action. ....or maybe I would have done the same thing, even if I had gotten to work on time.... but in any case, is a good reminder not to get your computer booted up and charts populated after the day is already underway, and start jumping into trades. If you come in that late....just watch for awhile. So what if you miss the whole frame. It took me well into the midday frame just to dig myself out of that early hole. ...and that's no way to trade a day.

Giving up nearly all early profits in pursuit signals coming late in frame is not a good habit nor a good way to begin the New Year. Fortunately, a very oversold signal did come at the Gap Close that proved recuperative...to say the least. But the best trades were not the fades today, even the one at the TF HOD with also gave a clear signal. No, with the current climate one of such extreme volatility, a better New Years resolution would be to take the Inflection Break-Outs, and go with the volatility, instead of trying to nail it at the pivot and exhaustion levels. Two of those today, would have netted clean profits quite early, and been far less painful. ....if I could but only get my head around breakouts.... and wishing all the best in their trading, their lives, and for the country overall in the coming New Year ahead.
