"2nd Trends are where the surprises lay waiting....", someone once wrote. And today was indeed no exception. ...and I have often thrown some precious capital at fading them when I was unable to find the turn at as the 1st Trend of the day reversed. But today, the signals for the early lows were clear, and the volatility very obliging. With such profits in hand, there is simply so reason to struggle with a 2nd trend. ...and a student who did miss the low, waited patiently for the right pullback and caught a piece of the 2nd trend long as it popped back into place... Nothing else is more gratifying than to see your methods absorbed and practiced by someone else... and often done so even better...

An gap up opening in the Dow of some 400 points apparently left an open gap in my brain, for while I was searching the early Open Range action for a possible ORB short triggering pattern, all I could comment on the room was the initial bull 3 Bar ORB setup which was far too risking considering the HUGE affect of possible gravity. (However, it worked for 2 pts in profit, had you been quick enough to get some of it...) And while I was musing on the risk of using any ORB pattern to buy such a behemoth risk, I missed the YM ORB sell pennant, which eventually produced a +100 point profit and an easy way to participate the early decline. Wake up and smell the coffee... or better still, wake up and drink some.... You can't use your Trade Plan if it doesn't have these entry models well laid out, and you won't use your Trade Plan if you are stunned by the unusual nature of the extreme an extreme gap.

As pointed out as an noteworthy market observation many years ago in the book Pivots and Patterns..,
an ORB Pennant often preclude a Persistent Trend Day in the direction of the breakout... but it took a student
to remind me of this in the chat room today, who wisely quit his trading after the profits from today's ORB Pennant breakdown, and watched with apparent amusement as I first lost those same profits, then went into a hole, and then had to go hunting for big game to dig myself out.... which gratefully did finally arrive for a decent recovery rally, finally, towards the end of the first frame... Trend prejudice, once in place, is a hard thing to shake. And I cannot account for my bullish prejudice in today's mini crash, but clearly paid for it, forcing me to put Serial Sequent and the oversold momentum readings of 3 TTI indicators to a risky, waterfall test. And to stress that my bullish stance had still not been squelched by the early brutal liquidation, when a near perfect short opportunity to the ensuing bear appeared in the action of the bouncing RTY, I was shaken out of it with a meager profit at the first sign of adversity, only to watch it careen back downward and onto to new lows....without me.. One has to marvel at the ability of the market to dissuade from its underlying intent. ....like the way I could not grasp nor believe in the extent of the amazing bull heights the market could achieve on the way up these past many years. ...and must question myself on such a day as today, if I am to face the same but opposite prejudice of disbelief if finally the Ursa Major has at last awoken from her slumbers, and is intent to dominate the current landscape of spectators, like me, with mouths agape.

As I reminded students in the valhalla chat room today, near the end of the 1st frame:

Fri Nov02 10:34AM of all trading days
Fri Nov02 10:35AM "Fade the First"
Fri Nov02 10:35AM and you're betting the better odds

I got away with 2nd trend fades today in the NQ because they occurred near the Trend Check, at extremes in the TTI momentum indicator, at the Sequents, with Rule of Alternation dictating the probable length of waves, as as the MA's were crossing down, signalling some confirmation that the highs had been fully rejected in favor of a budding 2nd trend down. ....just the right place to fade that technical confirmation signal and take long positions. Thus the failure of so many who use technical analysis signals.....they ignore CONTEXT. The booklets with titles like "Ten Things You Should Never Do" and "Follow These Ten Requirements for Trading Success" actually read more like a playbook to be faded. Confirmation is the killer of most traders. It brings them comfort to their entry executions, and disaster to their bottom line. It puts them squarely in the mix of the "90%" of most traders who consistently lose their account equity. ...but manages to help them feel better while losing it.

Many of these market psychology concepts and technical analysis can be found in the books Pivots, Patterns and Intraday Swings Trades, and True Self by Will Scheier, available in Kindle format at Amazon.com.

Serial Sequent™ ® is a fractal algorithm that identifies internal market pattern structure invisible to the naked eye. It's the exclusive propery of Will Scheier, ValhallaFutures.com, and available only in software format.

NQ can be the pesky Roadrunner to your woeful Wile E.Coyote. Turns can be so frothy that even if you've I.D.'d the turn with something as marvelous as Serial Sequent, you still get stop'd out.... again and again... "Why the tight stops?" you might ask.... my experience in the NQ is that if you actually caught the turn, it takes you away so quickly 'like a log in a freshet' and if you're too early, it doesn't matter if your stop-loss was 2pts or 10pts, it gets you anyway... and on truly volatile days, like those of late, even the dodgy YM can make you goal at the Sequent Turns and breakouts.. Have a Trade Plan, and include 'How To Recover' re-entry directives within that Plan.

On such volatile days, consider switching to the YM contract, or concentrating on it above the others. We get spoiled in normal volatility with the swing potential in the NQ and RTY, but on days such as yesterday, no stp-loss seems enough to capture the trend in NQ and the YM's added volatility takes it up in stature to what we get from the NQ on most days... Stay focused, trade from a concrete trade entry concept plan.

Without volatility and the concept of Market Inefficiency, there'd be no trades to take at all. But sometimes the volatility can be overwhelming.... Without some strong RTY profits in an early fade, the NQ losses would have put me over the top for the day. But the concept of the Dolly Parton Sequent fractal, and the concept of fading breakouts to the ETH highs, a two-contract short in a single NQ position reversed those fortunes from the negative to the up.. Had I just quit there.... but volatility is like a moth to flames, and is very hard to resist as entry signals begin to pop all over the place.... if you oan make your book on such days, best to close the register early....

Volatility is opportunity. Without it, there's little reason to be trading at all. But when volatility reaches such extremes as seen in recent days, it is all the more important to stick to the discipline of a Trade Plan with exacting Trade Entry Concepts and the rules surrounding them. ...and there's nothing wrong with stepping aside with early profits if 1st Frame goals are met with initial trades.... as digging out of the kind of deep holes that can accompany such days can be a daunting task... It remains very heartening that even after some ten years since the Serial Sequent fractal algorithm was discovered that it has survived and excelled with such amazing accuracy through some of the most challenging market activity in history. Have a plan that incorporates concepts that demonstrate validity in any kind of market....and then stick to that plan with some faith regardless of the emotional roller coaster that can come with such volatility.

Trade Entry Models are the combination of disparate technical event concepts that arrive simultaneously at the right edge of the video screen. They do not predict the violence of volatility, or the lack thereof. But oddly, they actually work better if a good deal of volatility is present. Wave fractals are more pronounced. Short covering is more desperate. Retests are more common that help show discrepancy in breadth and momentum. But the volatility is far more difficult to handle. Once in a position that is taken from extremes, it is best to just stay calm and let it work a bit. It might fail repeatedly to test the further support/resistance structure of the Pivot Exhaustion Grid. It may extend the current fractal structure to seek a further occurrence of the algorithm pattern we call Serial Sequent. ...and to further the difficulty, you might have dug yourself into a deficit as successive support levels fail. Have a maximum loss limit in mind before you enter any trades at all. Have a set of Trade Entry Models that help identify with some consistency the most likely places for the fractal waves to turn, pause, build and reverse. If this loss limit has not been reached, and you have been given an even more extended level to re-enter, partial out to pay for the trade, and then allow it a bit of breathing room to work. Look for target exits rather than trailing stops. Those are just 'come-get-me' messages to the market. Rather, use targets to let your position go INTO the thrusts for better returns.

The market seems designs at times to thwart your own individual expectations. It's almost as if it reads your mind. Then throw in this: that you are probably in a large pool of common opinion as to the market's outcome at any point along the way. That suggests that the market tends to thwart the majority of traders most of the time.

Today's ORB in the RTY produced a classic ORB Pennant. ...but I was only convinced it could go lower, even after the sharply lower opening. The ORB Pennant model demands to be bracketed. There's no point in trying to predict it. You bracket both sides of the pennant with entry stop orders, and manage the outcome. But today, I could only place sell stops below it, as I watched the NQ launch quickly leaving the RTY behind, and ready to collapse. The NQ then stalled, and the the RTY exploded--but not in the expected direction of a further decline. The results of this glaring mistake jarred me. Not only did it set me back in negative opportunity space going forward, it threw me out of step with subsequent trade opportunities. I then proceeded to mismanage a series of trades. Luckily, the signals were so good today for swings, that even with my disrupted attitude did I yet make a profit. During that effort, I left yet more of the best trades completely off my execution list. I didn't deserve to win today. It was just such a good day for intraday swings that even my worst efforts managed to make good. Step up to the plate ready to execute your plan. Your job is not one of predicting. Prediction is futile. Your job is to be the Trader. The Trader has a Plan. That Plan is designed to execute a practiced set of trade entry concepts. FOLLOW THE PLAN.

Whatever you get use to in the markets, even for a few days, changes. And just so today as I refrain from taking RTY signals having been spanked so badly by it in the previous two sessions, it behaves from fractal signals and grid levels like an audition for my next book. And me just watching it from the sidelines. And I was so tainted by recent experience that even when I did venture out and into a trade on an entry signal replete with the full compliment of disparate Technical Event Concepts on board, I rushed the stop-loss to break-even to avoid tearing my healing scars, only to watch it rally to heroic victories--without me. ...and just so it is the markets. They seem designed to encourage you to do exactly the wrong things at the wrong times... It did, however, feel great not to pay all those commissions when Martindaling into 4 and 6 contracts like I did the day before.... how I do miss the previous dollar value of the mini Russell at $100 / pt.

Another extraordinary volatility for RTY. Has always been a swing champ, but current action would make an FOMC surprise rate hike look normal. And with the contract value split in half, commissions can now become a factor, especially if playing a Martingale betting system. Why play more than one contract? ...because predicting which set of signals will fail and which will succeed is almost impossible. Such conclusions are entirely based on intuition. "Which dealer should I sit with?" ...but I admit, after Friday's action, maybe I just should have known....

Coming up near--but not quite--to your profit goals for a signal frame can put you into gray place. Why quit when things are going well? --you say. Well, because sometimes you run into a deer crossing the highway and it blindsides you right off the road.... ha!.. Today was as good a day in trading the NQ as I ever have, and although volatile, its signals remained true throughout the frame. But the Russell....sheesh... seldom--and not really since the days when I used to trade the 2;15pmET FOMC rate adjustments have I seen such hugh, spiking intraday swings...far beyond my meager stops or even my Martindale betting strategies to accommodate. True, if you could have figured out such swings, profits would be hugely rewarding.... but today, the RTY was far beyond my skill set to find the turns... No doubt, there is something technical to be learned from today's RTY action, outside the mental side of the game, I mean, but what that elusive secret might be, will have to wait for another day, and perhaps quite a few more such days of such behavior in repetition. ...and a good weekend to all...

Break-outs, (or 'break-downs', if direction makes a difference to your thinking) are more inconsistent than fades. Although Serial Sequent focuses only on a very precise fractal algorithm to focus fade entries, in truth, many attempts along the way of a trend to continue usually elicit an immediate rejection, and thus produce a profit when 'faded'. But it's the clean breakouts that produce the most immediate profits, and thus attract the most interest from 'momentum players' in the trading arena. ....but picking the right breakout levels and fractal algorithms is far trickier. The best breakouts--at least for my own trading, are those I usually miss. Either I don't see them coming, or I have discounted them, discarded them, or otherwise managed to dissuade myself of their potential. In other words, I have blocked them out of consideration. Whenever this happens to your trading for the appearance of a particular trade entry model, it is a huge opportunity to gleam the insight necessary for better trading. In trading, always go wherever your apprehensions are leading you away. Any thought that says 'that can't be true', is probably about to happen. Most reasons for you not taking a trade that is among your current Trade Plan entry models is one far more likely to produce the sought after profits--but from in the opposite trend direction than anticipated. Your apprehensions are a guidepost. In fact, they may be the best guidepost you can have for gauging the crowd. If you are so apprehensive of the event, so is the crowd, and it's trading AGAIST the crowd that produces the best results. Nowhere is this more prevalent than at sharply impulsive breakouts. That's why they move so well. They have come at a surprise to the majority. They are stopping out the crowd and proving them wrong. ...and nowhere is there a better place to take a position in the markets.

Study your trading with an eye to where you were at mentally in the precise action just at the precipice of those impulse breakouts. What was preventing you from taking that trade? Relive that moment. Savor the flavor of your misleading emotions. Those emotions will no doubt return to you. And although it's not really possible or wise to enter trades on the model of fading your own emotions, they can nonetheless be the beacon of light exposing the Trade Entry Model your Trader is being blocked from taking. Today, this happened to me in a very precise place. And although I was already finished trading for the frame, and only calling out in chat the technical models as they unfolded to the group of students who were still at their screens and in the chat room, I was completely unable to even consider a perfect breakout model example because of my faulty trade prejudices at the time. I've come back to study that place now more precisely. I'll go for coffee and give it some more thought. And then later, after I've gone on to other activities and forgotten about it completely for awhile, I'll revisit it again. Only in this way can you ever really learn to overcome some habit of blocking that is impeding the better aspects of the Trader behavior you are pursing. Be the Trade Plan, not the prejudice. Every negative apprehension is in fact it's own prediction, arriving in disguise. Predictions are crippling to the Trader. They belong to the world of the Analyst. The Analyst is not allowed to trade. Review the Trade Plan. Once the tape is going, it doesn't matter about the Analyst's or the Account's apprehensions. You are the Trader. Trade the Plan. A trade in the Trade Plan not taken is just as much an egregious trading error as a trade taken but unsuccessful. ...in fact, it may be more so.

If Test-n-Reject is the most common model of price in the 1st Frame of the day, then the 2nd trend is more likely to be true--and of a surprise--than the first. Emotionally, however, the 2nd trend is always easier to fade than the first. ...and here's the subtlety, for the more experienced trader, MISSING the turn of the 1st trend of the day can trigger a need to take trades in the less highly probable 2nd trend simply because of an overwhelming need to participate in the action, and to revenge the market for having successfully turned already without you. Today I was guilty of this rookie mistake, and the surprising strength of the 2nd trend in the NQ stopped me out successively, erasing all earlier NQ profits. Thus the YM trade became an act of revenge itself, and it was pure luck I was not also stopped out of that one. Somehow, I escaped my own blunders today, but I cannot claim in pride in my behavior. Respect the 2nd Trend of the frame. If the market has successfully turned from the 1st Trend price extreme, it's probably not a pullback in the first trend at all, but a roaring 2nd trend. And until it is sufficiently spent within the measurements of its own parameters instead of the measurements against the 1st trend from which it has come, all early fades will suffer the consequences. "Second trends are where the surprises hide", my mentor had to remind me. ....and even today, I still make that mistake.

Persistent Trend Days are often the most difficult to trade. Ideally, a First Chance Texaco pullback will appear that allows you to get on board and in trend. ....but not today. Sometimes the secret to just staying alive on fades is to recognize the action and model earlier enough to plan for and adjust targets. For although the market will still pause at the Sequents and Substitute Sequents, a position that is not 'paid for' by a very modest partial exit will usually the suffering the indignity of being stopped out rather quickly. Keep most of your powder dry. Tomorrow is another day, and most day models are NOT the Persistent Trend.

Sometimes the strength of the underlying trend can produce surprising resurgence. And the appearance of such resurgent thrusts can also lend itself to more shallow pullbacks to the trend than would normally be desired for in-trend pullback entries. Since peaks in momentum show up on your instrument panel with those strong resurgent trend thrusts, you are even more hesitant to get into a pullback opportunity too early, for fear the over-extended trend has not had time to full correct itself. One method of accommodating this situation is to use a small initial size when these shallow, early pullback opportunities present themselves.

Use a stop order to enter in-trend for small lots when a larger pullback is otherwise expected. This will allow you to be stopped into the resurgent direction even though a better pullback level was not reached. Once in, trail the position with a stop loss order slowly, watching first for a new extreme to the prevailing trend that has been so surprising. That new price extreme might also provide surprising results. Milk your small position with a low trailing stop until it has reached extremes in momentum again, thus providing a 'double tap' on your momentum instrument panel. With these new profits in hand as cushion, you will be better position to attempt fading the trend again.

But this time, be sure to gather sufficient evidence of WorkDone, as early and shallow pullbacks that provide resurgent price extremes to the original trend of the frame are an early sign of a Persistent Trend Day, and thus all 1st Frame fading could be peppered with stop-outs until a more complex, 1st Chance Texaco pullback arrives for a larger, in-trend position to be risked. "Position yourself to be surprised," or so did my mentor have to frequently remind me. And trust this: that is what the market is really all about, the achievement of surprise. Cue the sage Heraclitus: "Expect the unexpected." And just how can such a paradox as that be incorporated into a Trade Plan? 'If this ________, then _________that is what I will do.' Accept the outcome, regardless of whether it is a surprise to your initial entries. Your contingencies kick in, and positions can then be taken that you might actually disagree with emotionally. "This can't be true", your head may be saying. But the Trader is commissioned to follow his plan. Quit thinking. It's all in the Plan. Follow the Plan. Thinking is for the Analyst. ...and the Analyst is NOT allowed in the live trading room.

A good example today of what so often happens when given the choice--after reaching a daily profit goal--whether to get sucked into the alluring volatility and continue with trades or quit with so much time left in the frame. Sometimes the choice isn't even the inducement of further volatility....sometimes I quit when ahead when I just feel the need for some strong coffee... but today, for whatever reason I had or didn't have, to quit while ahead, I continued trading. In this case, it might be fairly said I was induced into proving the methods I use would work against an aggressive selling trend. But the ride was so rough that the profits I made in one contract were easily overtaken by the losses in another. Net nothing. Have a daily profit goal. The more you trade after that, the greater the number of opportunities you have at trading errors and losses. Just the extended concentration alone will begin to cause errors and poor execution timing.

That the 2nd trend of the 1st Frame is more likely to be true and the 1st trend false is an observation every floor trader makes early on in his career. Just do the statistics: nearly 80% of all trading day models are of the Test-n-Reject variety, and only 20% or so each month are Persistent Trend. (see the book Pivots, Patterns and Intraday Swings for examples. Or as my mentor was fond of saying "if it goes up fast, it seldom lasts". The problem is, how to judge when this first trend is over and ripe to be faded. Even with all the displays of irrational volatility seen in recent days, it was still a surprise to me that the NQ, the RTY and even the YM would eventually make it all the way down to the ETH lows before this ripeness would finally set in. And yet I threw some good money at this first trend too early because I couldn't believe it would actually arrive there. Chart your highs and lows. Know the market came from in both directions in over-night trading. Be prepared to take these levels into consideration as your possible trade entry levels for the frame.

And I can hear the usual refrain from chat room rookies complaining about this action. "They knew where my stops were and they came and got me. The market is rigged." Nonsense. Nobody knows where your stops are. EVERYBODY KNOWS WHERE THE STOPS ARE. All you have to do is look at a chart of all-session highs and lows to know that. Thus the Douglas Corollary: "....most of the money to be made in the markets is made at the places where most traders are being stopped out and proven wrong." For the complete Douglas Premise and its two corollaries, see the book True Self, available on Amazon.com for a few dollars in Kindle format.

The nature of market action and pattern model is most usually revealed in Rule of Alternation. In the 60 minute, All Session bars, a grinding, stutter-step rally was punctuated today in the 1st Frame by a vertical, impulsive collapse. I wasn't prepared for this alternation, if I had been, I'd have been diligently examining the Inflection Levels for break-down short entry opportunities. The market places these break-down levels at precisely the same Sequent Levels that prescribe the reversal opportunities for fading the initial frame's order flow. So unless the Trader is ready to stop-n-reverse his positions at these levels, it's going to be a painful morning fading the trend.

If all first trend fade opportunities fail, as they usually do not, then on such days as this there are the First Chance Texaco pullbacks, that usually offer speeding and impulsive action back WITH the prevailing trend, and a chance not only to recover initial fade losses and get healthy, but also to move into profits for the day's trading business goals. .....unless, like me today, losses are so deep that a goal of break-even might be just daunting enough to take small positions on pullbacks just enough to get even...and call it a day. Today, I missed the First Chance Texaco opportunity to short the RTY in-trend altogether. I blinked. It disappeared into the dust. I was well prepared, however, for the NQ's first chance to fill up the tank at my Texaco station of choice, but hardly got a $5 dollar bill out of the pump and jumped out way early at the first sign I had nearly broke even for the day. ...not an exemplar display of trading skill... Be prepared for the action to alternate. If the action is slip-slide liquidation in the early going, be ready when it alternates into wider swing opportunities. Keep some powder dry for a bounce on which to finally get in trend. Pullback from any notion of revenge trading....that you can finally find the turn on such days is nothing more than luck, and will ill serve your cause when the real opportunities finally present themselves where your losses have hit their daily limits.

...but there's always next week....
And a good weekend to all othewise...
